Morning Wildflower Walk at Panthertown Valley
May 2, 2025 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
Panthertown Valley Trailhead - Public Access, Breedlove Rd, Glenville, NC 28736, USA
We will be visiting one of the most special places in all of Southern Appalachia, Panthertown Valley. Called the "Yosemite of the East" Panthertown is an incredible hiking, camping, fishing destination located near Cashiers, NC. It is also filled with beautiful waterfalls, scenic views, and of course wonderful wildflowers.
We will be meeting at the Salt Rock Trailhead and Parking area, and will walk from there to the Salt Rock Overlook. If you have hiked here in the past, then you know that this is about a 20 minute walk, at hiking speed. In typical Wildflower walk fashion, we will spend our time walking slowly and meeting all kinds of beautiful Plants and Flowers along the way.
Here is a link to google map directions to the parking area. https://goo.gl/maps/1NzT1fQpc1GtpRnL9
Here is a link to information about Panthertown Valley, including how you can help preserve it through monetary donations, and volunteering. https://panthertown.org/
Weekly Wildflower Walks will be meeting on Fridays throughout the season, with a morning session from 9am to 12pm, and an afternoon session from 1pm to 4pm. We will meet at a different location each week, following and chasing the best blooms and locations. Remember that on our walks The Wildflowers Are the Destination!
All of the Friday Wildflower Walks are offered on a sliding scale of $50-$15 per person, and are capped at 15 people per session. This allows for more people to be able to attend the walks. I ask that attendees pay based on their ability, and on how they value the experience.

We will be visiting the Vertical Bog on the Blue Ridge Parkway. This incredible spot is the shortest and easiest walk of my whole series, and one loaded with the most amazing collection of rare and special Plants and Wildflowers.
One of the most special and iconic spots on the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Vertical Bog is roadside seepage area unlike any other, filled with special, rare and endemic plants that exist right along the parkway across from an overlook. Carnivorous Sundews, Grass-of-Parnassus, Sticky Tofieldia, and five different species of st John's wort can all be seen at this short and easy walk.

May 23, 2025 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
Onion Mountain Preserve, Ellijay Rd, Franklin, NC 28734, USA
This Week we are going to go to a newer location for my walks, to visit at a new acquisition by Mainspring Conservation Trust that put hundreds of acres into protection through a conservation easement.
We will be going there to see the American Columbo Frasera caroliniensis in bloom. This spectacular Plant lives for 5-30 years as leaves laying on the ground before it decides to send up a flower stalk, bloom, and then die.
Here is a writeup about the plant: http://www.midwestnaturalist.com/frasera_caroliniensis.html
There will be other Plants in bloom and lots of botanical interest along this easy trail.
